Another day in the life

Part of my job involves going to school fairs -- bringing all the stuff, setting up the table, standing there to answer questions and encourage people to fill out inquiry cards. These events are always at night or on the weekends, and are inevitably a period of time when the normal laws about how fast time goes by no longer apply....

Mostly business

I took the train from Boston to New York yesterday morning, and will head back home later this afternoon; an overnight trip for work and for just a few little things to fill in my time and make the trip my own. I walked 10 miles yesterday, and just over 5 miles today; New York does that to me.

The friend I love to visit in New York

The very real, actual Winnie-the-Pooh. Piglet, Eeyore, Tigger, and Kanga are here, too, donated to the New York Public Library by the Milne family. Hullo, old bear.

Early morning promise

Before the all-day, off-site, advancement team meeting got started, anything seemed possible.

Resilient

I didn't plant this rose. It was here when we moved in, and frankly had the characteristics of a lot of things in this place -- oddly placed, out of keeping with anything else around it, poorly tended, but hanging on. I'd given up after harsh frosts late spring took it entirely back to the ground, but instead of pulling it out I planted some morning glory seeds around it. And the rose is winning.

In the case of actual armeggedon....

Lucky for us, it wasn't even a drill. But it was one of those moments, just like in the movies, when suddenly every inch of the sky is crowded with threatening, oddly-lit clouds and you think hmmmm -- will I see the Sta-Puff Marshmallow Man any minute now?

Since we have to drop off a printer anyway

I figure we may as well bring him some cookies, too.

No neat finish

Nope. I wasn't able to wrap up my work for the week, and leave my desk all clean and tidy before heading out for the weekend. And I just walked away anyway. Progress.

It's a democracy, people

State primaries were held today. At about 6 pm, I was only the 88th person to have voted in my town of nearly 10,000 people. I never understand why people don't show up to vote.

Hitchhiker

I was relieve that I could pull over to first take a photo and then encourage my hitchhiker to jump off so that there were no catastrophes once I reached cruising altitude....

A quilt for Christmas

I decided Dean needs a quilt. For his dorm room. For Christmas. It is energizing to be sewing again, and there's something to be said for not feeling guilty taking time away from hanging out with the family to sew on a day off.

Reclaimed

Ken's settled back in to his old spot on the sofa, and is making good use of it. This means I get my old spot back, too.

And he's off

I can't sum this up. I am so deeply and entirely happy for him, and I know he's ready as ready for this next chapter of his life. I remind myself that this is all about him and it's not about me; I'll learn on my own how to re-become myself, somehow. Adventure is out there. We'll both find it and reconnect in new ways, as people who have grown.

Preview

We drove into town tonight, and walked through part of the Boston University campus on our way to dinner with a friend of Dean's and his parents. Justin was a classmate in high school, a boarding student from China who will also be attending BU with Dean. We stored some of Justin's things for him over the summer, and wanted to welcome Justin and his family to the BU community. We hadn't really had specific "it's your last night at home" plans, and initially it seemed a little too bad that this was the only night that was going to work for this outing; however, it turned out to be a pretty perfect way to celebrate and share and begin this next big adventure. Also helped me take my mind off all of it.
